Course Information
Description	This course covers basic microbiology and immunology and is primarily directed at pre-nursing, pre-allied health, and non-science majors. It provides an introduction to historical concepts of the nature of microorganisms, microbial diversity, the importance of microorganisms and acellular agents in the biosphere, and their roles in human and animal diseases. Learning Outcomes	1. Provide examples of the impact of microorganisms on agriculture, environment, ecosystem, energy, and human health, including biofilms. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Microbiology with Diseases By Body Systems (5th ed.) by Robert Bauman. ISBN: 978013478304. Publisher is Pearson. This textbook will contain an access code for Pearson Mastering Microbiology. Please only purchase the textbook from the Lamar State College Bookstore or directly from the Publisher in order to receive the correct access code.

Determination of Final Grade	There will be Four Lecture Exams that will represent 100% of the overall grade for the course. Each Lecture Exam will represent 25% of the overall grade for the course.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies	No grades are dropped when calculating averages. No makeup exams are given, and there are NO re-takes on any exam. Lecture and Lab grades are NOT combined. Each course will be graded independently. Unexcused Exams that are not taken as scheduled will receive a grade of zero. All lecture assignments are completed using information in the textbook and the Mastering Microbiology website. The assignments are completed on the Mastering Microbiology site and are accessed by the link on the LECTURE course website. The same Pearson Mastering access code is used for both Lecture Pearson Mastering Assignments and Pre-Lab Pearson Mastering Assignments. Attendance in all lectures IS REQUIRED. It is NOT possible to attend lecture from a different instructor. It is also NOT possible to take lecture exam from a different lecture instructor. If you have questions, you can come by during my office hours, email me at anytime, or post your question in the Discussion Board of the course Black Board page. You will need to schedule time to complete exams during their period of availability. You will be able to take an exam after the scheduled availability period, but there will be a time penalty imposed (10% time reduction for each day that student is late taking the exam). This is an online class. It is YOUR responsibility to have a RELIABLE computer AND Internet access for the duration of this course. Please note that while many of the course materials can be accessed using a cell phone and/or tablet device, there are many questions on the homework assignments that can only be accessed on a computer (desktop or laptop). In addition, EXAMS CAN ONLY BE TAKEN ON A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP COMPUTER. If your computer breaks for any reason during the semester, IT DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU FROM THE REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINES OF THE COURSE. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure all assignments and exams are completed by their due date. Any assignments exams not completed by the end of the availability date will receive a grade of "0" zero.
Attendance Policy	Absences, Tardiness, and Make-ups: Attendance is required, and punctuality is expected. You are responsible for all materials covered in class. If you quit coming to class and do not officially drop, your grades will be averaged, and you will receive the grade represented by this average. The administrative details are your responsibility (You must officially drop the course). You can only miss one exam with an excused absence (excluding the final), and you must take the final exam. Excused absences include medical and family emergencies and are determined at the instructor's discretion. Poor preparation or conflict with other scheduled exams is not a valid excuse for missing an exam. If you miss an exam because of an excused absence, your lowest lecture exam score will be used as the score for the exam that you missed. Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
